What is African American Music Appreciation Month?
African American Music Appreciation Month, celebrated every June, honors the profound contributions of Black musicians across jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues, and hip-hop. Founded in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter at the urging of songwriter Kenny Gamble, it was renamed by President Barack Obama in 2009 to reflect its broader significance. From Louis Armstrong to Beyoncé, Black artists have shaped the sound of American culture and driven global music movements.
