What is Harvey Milk Day?
Harvey Milk Day honors the birthday and legacy of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay person elected to public office in California. Made a state holiday in 2009, it celebrates his pioneering role in LGBTQ+ rights through education, flag-raisings, and advocacy. Elected to San Francisco's Board of Supervisors in 1977, Milk was assassinated in 1978 but remains an enduring symbol of hope.
