What is Eid il-Burbara?
On Saint Barbara's Day, Lebanese children dress in costume and go door to door singing for sweets and small change — a tradition said to echo Barbara's own disguises as she fled her persecutors. Households cook burbara, a bowl of boiled wheat with sugar, cinnamon, raisins and nuts.
