What is Esperanto Day?
Esperanto Day, observed on July 26, commemorates the publication of the first Esperanto textbook on July 26, 1887, by Dr. Ludwik Lazarus Zamenhof. Zamenhof, a Polish ophthalmologist, created Esperanto as a neutral international language intended to foster peace and understanding among people of different nations. Today, Esperanto is spoken by an estimated one to two million people worldwide, making it the most widely spoken constructed language. The day celebrates the enduring vision of a world united by a shared language, free from the barriers that divide us.
