What is National German-American Day?
National German-American Day celebrates the contributions of German immigrants to the United States, beginning with the founding of Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1683 by 54 German families seeking religious freedom. Proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan in 1983 to mark the 300th anniversary and approved by Congress in 1987, the day honors nearly 50 million Americans of German ancestry and the German words — Kindergarten, Wanderlust, Doppelganger — that quietly shape everyday English.
