Oktoberfest in Blumenau is the largest German heritage festival outside Germany, held annually in the Brazilian city founded by German immigrants. Started in 1984 as a morale-booster after a devastating flood, the festival has grown into a multi-week celebration of Bavarian traditions — dirndls and lederhosen, bratwurst and pretzels, oompah bands and folk dances. Hundreds of thousands gather each year to celebrate German-Brazilian heritage with parades, food, and plenty of Gemütlichkeit.
