What is Sekaten?
Sekaten is a vibrant Javanese celebration honoring the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, blending Islamic teaching with local customs. Founded in the 15th century during the reign of Sultan Hamengkubuwono I of Yogyakarta, the festival uses gamelan music, parades, traditional dance, and market stalls to draw crowds and share Islamic teachings. Today it remains a cherished cultural and spiritual moment across Java.
