What is World Distance Learning Day?
World Distance Learning Day celebrates the freedom to learn without borders. Its roots go back further than the internet: in 1728 Caleb Phillips taught shorthand by mail in Boston; in the 1840s Isaac Pitman taught the same subject by postcard; in 1858 the University of London became the first to grant degrees to remote students. Radio, television and the internet each widened access further — and distance learning now lets parents, night-shift workers and rural learners study on their own schedule, at any hour. The day invites trying a free online class, sharing what you learned, helping someone start a course, or joining a virtual study group.
